The Tools and Machines We Use – Explained Simply Taking care of trees isn’t always easy, especially when they’re very big or hard to reach. That’s why we use a range of tools and machines to help us do our job safely and quickly. Here’s a guide to the most common tools we use and how they help us look after your trees and garden. Chainsaws – Cutting Branches and Trees Chainsaws are one of the most important tools we use. They’re machines with a fast-moving chain that cuts through wood. We use them to trim big branches, remove parts of a tree, or cut down trees completely. There are different sizes of chainsaws for different jobs. Smaller chainsaws are great for cutting little branches or working in tight spaces. Bigger chainsaws are used when we need to cut through thick trunks or very large limbs. All of our team members are trained to use chainsaws safely. We always wear protective gear like helmets, gloves, and goggles, and we follow all the safety steps to keep you, your home, and our workers safe. Climbing Gear – Getting Up High Safely Sometimes, we need to reach branches that are very high up. In those cases, our team uses special climbing gear. This includes ropes, harnesses, helmets, and clips that help us climb safely into the tree. Our team knows how to climb without hurting the tree. We move carefully and make sure not to break branches we don’t need to cut. Climbing is helpful in places where we can’t use a ladder or machine, like in small gardens or near buildings. Climbing lets us take care of just the parts of the tree that need help. This means we can prune (or trim) the tree without cutting the whole thing down. Wood Chippers – Turning Branches into Mulch After we cut branches or remove a tree, there’s often a big pile of wood left over. To clean this up, we use a machine called a wood chipper. This machine turns large branches into small wood chips. These chips can be taken away or left in your garden to use as mulch. Mulch helps stop weeds from growing and keeps water in the soil. Using a wood chipper helps us clean up quickly and leaves your garden looking tidy. Stump Grinders – Getting Rid of Tree Stumps When we cut down a tree, the bottom part—the stump—is left behind. Tree stumps can be a problem if you want to plant something new, mow the lawn, or use that space for anything else. That’s why we use stump grinders. These are machines with sharp blades that grind the stump into tiny pieces. We can either remove the whole stump or grind it down so you can cover it with soil or grass. We choose the right size grinder depending on the job. After grinding the stump, we also clean up the mess and leave the area ready for you to use. Hedge Trimmers – Keeping Your Hedges Neat We don’t just work with trees—we also take care of hedges. Hedges can grow fast and start to look messy if they aren’t trimmed regularly. To fix that, we use hedge trimmers. These machines can be powered by electricity or petrol and come in different sizes. Small hedge trimmers are good for detailed work, while larger ones help with big hedges. We can shape your hedge, cut it back, and remove any dead parts. This keeps the hedge healthy and helps your garden look tidy. We also clean up all the clippings after we’re done. Ladders and Lifts – Reaching Tall Trees Not all trees can be climbed easily, and sometimes it’s safer to use a ladder or a lift (also called a cherry picker). These tools help us reach tall branches or the tops of hedges without needing to climb. Ladders are useful for small jobs, and lifts are better for very tall trees. Lifts are machines with a platform that raises us up, and we use them when working in open spaces. We always set up our ladders and lifts carefully so your garden and property are protected. Safety is always our top concern. Hand Tools – For the Small Stuff For smaller jobs or work that needs extra care, we use hand tools. These include pruners, small saws, rakes, and spades. Hand tools help us shape young trees, remove dead twigs, or clean up little branches. They’re also great when we’re working in small spaces or around delicate plants. We also use rakes and brooms to clean the area when we’re done, so your garden looks great. Safety Gear – Keeping Everyone Safe No matter what kind of job we’re doing, we always wear safety equipment. This includes: Helmets to protect our heads Goggles to shield our eyes Gloves for our hands Ear protection to reduce noise Strong boots to protect our feet We also put up signs or fences if we’re working near a public path or driveway. Keeping people and pets safe is always part of the job. The Right Tool for Every Job At Nottingham Tree Surgeons, we know that choosing the right tool makes a big difference. Every garden and tree is different, and we always plan carefully to use the right method.
